As New York Fashion Week 2023 wrapped up, you can see the start of new trends. Did you catch any of the hubbub of new styles or looks coming? We sure did, and together let’s take a look at the trending styles on the runway! We’ll even teach you how to incorporate them in your daily ‘do.
It’s interesting that each designer has similar styles each year, even with models of such diversity on the runway. Sometimes it can be hard to spot the latest trends with varying looks, but they are most certainly there. How do you spot them? Well, you take it in sections and patterns. For example, look at where the part is placed. Or, look above the ears: is every model wearing a form of a high ponytail or do most of them lie at the nape of the neck? What about texture, are most styles sleek or do they have a lot of body and waves?
Given all of these observations, we have laid out the five most trending looks of New York Fashion Week 2023:
1. Lived-in-layers
Layers, layers everywhere! From the shaggy wolf cuts, retro inspired butterfly cuts, all the way to the iconic “Rachel” haircut, we are seeing layers everywhere! Drawing inspiration from 70’s hairstyles, layers are the new modern go-to. Some styles are smooth and elegant, but we are seeing more lived-in styles than ever. With subtle waves, to straight disconnected layers, this look can be worn and styled in many ways; many made it more contemporary by tucking it behind their ears for a little peek-a-boo.
To get the style, first (obviously) you need a layered haircut. To style a wolf cut or shag, use products like Shu Uemura’s Muroto Volume to get texture and lift, followed by Ishi Sculpt to maximize the hair’s texture and piece it apart at the ends. If you have straight hair, you may need to extra volume spray and scrunch to add bends to the hair to give some extra movement. If you want a more elegant look, you can smooth all of the layers in one direction for a very retro style or butterfly layers. All of these styles can be even further brought to life with some gorgeous lived-in rooty balayage to accent the depth and texture.
It’s safe to say that piecey layers won’t be going anywhere anytime soon and we’re here for it!
2. Bob Cuts
Bobs are back! This hairstyle was a major hit on the runway and could be for you too. This cut is great for those who are tired of having long locks and is a fun way to experiment with a new length by changing things up! A shorter cut works for all face shapes and hair types because of the many different shapes and angles that can be created.
To get the look, ask for a bob. Your stylist can help determine which length and shape is best for your face. Some bobs are angled, others are layered, but what we saw most from NYFW was the choppy and the blunt straight bobs. To style, you can just let it air dry with minimal products, blow it out for a sleeker look, or use a curling iron to give a bend or wave to the hair. Each look is stunning and gives the simple style a personalized feel and ability to work for any occasion.
3. Hair Accessories
Whether it be hair clips, scarves, pins, or headbands, hair accessories can give excitement to any look! They are a quick and easy way to spice up your look and they go with any hair length or type. It’s a great way to put a modern spin on a classic look!
To get the look, try adding some clips into your style. The clips could be used as a tool to hold, or just as an accent piece! You can also try incorporating a colorful scarf into a braid or chains coiled around a ponytail for a stunning pop.
4. Statement Braids
Braided hairstyles are one of the oldest ways to style your hair, and this trend continues on! Braids are a fun way to express your creativity with the many different styles to choose from including a classic braid, fishtail, french, dutch, waterfall, box braids, and this year’s runway trend of lattice braids! There are braid styles for anyone and they can help you to achieve a personalized updo style for any occasion.
For a spunky style, try starting braids closer to the crown of your head and leaving the ends a few inches past the elastic. For a modern look, try a lattice braid that creates a gorgeous enveloped half up-half down style.
Now, here is the fun part! These are trends and not rule books! As always, do what feels good for you and enjoy your hair.
